The reference (extension) of any locution or thought, which is physically real, is itself nothing but a bundle of resonances. This is what the atomic theory of matter says. But then linguistic reference, which is itself a pattern of resonance in the human body, has no more and no less ultimate significance than those other patterns of resonance called physical objects extended beyond it in space and time. Who is to say which cause has ultimate priority?
